2nd September, ElbePort Wittenberge officially inaugurated

Hamburg, 2nd September 2011: With a celebratory opening for customers, associates, partners and politics, ElbePort Wittenberge started its operations as a multi-purpose-terminal. Hinterland transports from HH and regional loads in Wittenberge can be dealt due to the completion of the pier 2, made for bulk and general cargo, project cargo. The three main associates of the inland port are the Carl Robert Eckelmann Group from Hamburg, Eggers Umwelttechnik and Buss Group. Additional associate shares are hold by regional companies such as the Eisenbahngesellschaft Potsdam.

“The ElbePor Wittenberge and particularly the customers profit from this associate structure. Inland water transport, port turnover, railway undertaking cooperate in order to develop the location into a trimodal port of transshipment and hub for the seaport hinterland transports with their know how in logistics and their respective professional competences”, says Juergen Thies, managing director ElbePort Wittenberge GmbH.

Being located between Hamburg and Berlin and thanks to the triple connection railway, roads and water, the inland port possesses the requirements to become a new hub for transports, among others into the potential markets of Eastern Europe as well as the developed industrial locations of Central Europe.

A back and forth trip via barges between Hamburg and Wittenberge is possible in less than 30 hours.

Especially, the adjacent acreage for the loading and unloading of bulk and general cargo, container and project cargo is a crucial advantage of Wittenberge compared to other inland ports which often have sparse acreage capacities. On the one hand, it is possible to handle huge pieces of project cargo such as components of wind energy plants. On the other hand, producing companies gain incentives for settlements in Wittenberge.
